5 minutes is enough… to kill

It is about my favorite technique of speed sketching, that I teach every course inside Kharkiv School of architecture and outside to kill critical thinking, over-expectations and fear of mistakes.

What has this done for me at first?
Well, at the beginning my life just forgot about the “right things”. I was trying to catch a lot of slides that the tutor at the workshop was showing to us. I saw ‘general lines’, first stroke, spot, composition, how to draw with a continuous line. My right side of the brain had started its engine.

Now I show each student a sequence of black and white pictures and ask them to turn off their own critic, who’s begging for perfection and similarity. We work fast, less than a minute, changing materials and instruments. Mostly they use pens with 0,35 liner, grey markers and aqua brush with black ink.
We shout, laugh, I speak fast while demonstrating giving small clues to draw and all this looks like a battle.

I teach how to sketch in minimal, without thinking, on reflexes, to see at first, further to catch, building frames, switching between instruments and scales. This helps to pin your flying idea from your head. This will help your hand to think faster than words in the head. This is close to meditation. I admire this much.
